Karanba - Brasil

Karanba is a social initiative founded by former Norwegian football player Tommy Nilsen in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Karanba uses football as a tool for social transformation, helping children and young people from underprivileged areas with personal development, education, and self-expression.

Through football, Karanba empowers youth, and gives them hope and opportunities to build better futures. Since its inception in 2006, Karanba has positively influenced the lives of over ten thousand children and young people. Long-term help is a fundamental principle of all work at Karanba. By creating a safe, inspiring and developing place for children and young people, Karanba creates the necessary foundation for lasting change to a sustainable life filled with quality of life. Participation in Karanba is open to everyone in the age group 6 to 20 without charge. All admission takes place regardless of gender, race, finances or football skills. The only prerequisites are that the participants in Karanba go to a public school and that Karanba's management has access to the participants' school attendance and grades.

Since the establishment of the UN's sustainability goals in 2015, these goals have been a central part of the prioritization and development of the Karanba project. Karanba's activities cover to a greater or lesser extent nine of the seventeen objectives. However, there are four of the goals that the project primarily focuses on:

Sustainable Development Goal 3:

Ensuring good health and promoting quality of life.

Sustainable Development Goal 4:

Ensure inclusive, fair and good education.

Sustainable Development Goal 5:

Achieve equality and strengthen the position of girls and women in society.

Sustainable Development Goal 10:

Reduce inequalities.

W Initiative will support Karanba over a period of three years. The funds will go towards new and necessary facilities, several measures to increase recruitment and improve the integration with the local community in new areas. In addition, funds have been set aside for the establishment of an alumni network and a separate development program.
